Résumé

Londres, à l'aube de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le colonel Cronin fait ses adieux à Myra, la femme dont il est fou amoureux depuis leur première rencontre, en 1917. Ils devaient s'unir, mais la guerre en a décidé autrement et Cronin doit rejoindre le front français. Peu de temps après, la jeune femme voit son nom dans la rubrique des morts au combat : sans emploi, son univers s'écroule et oscille entre misère totale et prostitution.
