Résumé

La guerre d'Espagne est terminée. Tom Martin, un aviateur américain engagé aux côtés des Républicains, attend dans une cellule d'être fusillé, en compagnie d'un prêtre dévoué, qu'il étonne par son cynisme. Au dernier moment, il est sauvé de la mort par sa femme, venue supplier le commandant de la prison. Le commandant ne tarde pas à s'apercevoir que Martin n'est pas plus marié que sa soi-disant épouse. Dans l'avion que les deux évadés sont obligés de voler pour fuir leurs poursuivants, Augusta Nash, dite Gusto, explique à Tom qu'elle l'a sauvé pour pouvoir ensuite rédiger l'article qui fera d'elle une journaliste célèbre. Tom, séduit, lui dérobe un baiser…
