I’m going to give you a brief presentation of the great melodramas realised in Hollywood between 1938 et 1960. The period included between 1930 (or the late 1920's) and 1960 (or the beginning of the 1960's) is said to be « the golden age of Hollywood ». In my opinion, about half of the best movies ever made were realised in this place at that time. Today, I think subjectively that cinema has produced about 500 masterpieces, 250 were made during this period in the United States. They were produced by the studios, which were disposing huge amount of money and human resources. You know the studios names : MGM, Universal, Twentieth Century-Fox, Columbia, Warner, Paramount, and RKO. Studios employed a lot of european artists ans technicians who either fled the nazism in the thirties, either went to Hollywood to professionaly succeed.Let’s now talk about melodramas.
The term melodrama refers to a dramatic work that puts characters in a lot of danger in order to appeal to the emotions. It is based around having the same character in every scene, often a hero, a heroine and a villain. The term originated from the early 19th-century French word mélodrame, which is derived from Greek melos, music, and French drame, drama. The first melodramas were made at the earlier times of the cinema.Charles Chaplin, D.W. Griffith were the two first well-known directors of such movies. Their melodramatic films tended to use plots that often deal with crises of human emotion, failed romance or friendship, strained familial situations, tragedy, illness, neuroses, or emotional and physical hardship. For instance The Kid by Charles Chaplin realised in 1921 is an emblematic melodrama movie. The kid has no parents, lives in the streets,…
One great director of melodramas in Hollywood is John M. Stahl. John M. Stahl was born in Baku (Azerbaidjan) in 1886. His real name is Jacob Morris Strelitsky. When he was a child his family moved to New York. He began working in the city's growing motion picture industry at a young age and directed his first short silent film in 1914. In the early 1920s Stahl signed on with Louis B. Mayer Pictures in Hollywood and in 1924 was part of the Mayer team that became MGM Studios.
In 1939 he directs When Tomorrow Comes with a french actor, Charles Boyer. Boyer is among the very few french actors who have succeeded in the United States, with perhaps Maurice Chevalier and Leslie Caron. A few words about the plot of « when tomorrow comes », very emblematic of the genre. A discreet man (Charles Boyer) goes to a restaurant. A waitress (Irene Dunne) asks him what he wants to eat. They begin to discuss a little. This waitress has a lot of problems with her boss. She and her colleagues plan to go on strike to have better salaries. At a moment, i don’t remember how and why, Irene Dunne has an invitation to go to a party. She arrives alone in a manor and discovers that his owner is Boyer, and that Boyer is a millionair. They have a talk, and Boyer begins to play the piano and to sing. Irene Dunne falls in love with him probably at this moment. This scene is very well directed, with music and light effects. When the night comes, and Boyer gives her a lift back, a storm approaches… and melodramatic incidents move on until the end of the film. The way of directing the movie explains why it is so successfull. The plot is unbelievable, mais Stahl succeeds to make it credible. The actors act in a very sober way, like everyone behaves in the real life. It is possible for the viewer to be entirely involved in this story, and to relate to the caracters. In another great film by John Stahl, Leave Her To Heaven, Stahl uses low-angles shots to show the actress, Gene Tierney, riding a horse at the top of a hill, touches the sky and the clouds with her body. It’s of course a parabol to express the capacity of the caracter to reach a divine dimensions.Another great director of hollywoodian melodramas is Douglas Sirk. Sirk was born in Germany under the name of Hans Detlef Sierck, in 1897. He realised movies in Germany, France and fled Europe at the late thirties, to work for Universal. His own life looks like a melodrama. Because he fled Germany, he couldn’t see anymore his son and his wife who were involved in the nazi party… His son was shot during the second word war, and so on…
A few words about movies by Sirk : Sirk employs the traditional ingredients of the melodramas, but adds a european sensitivity, and also the spirit of the german romantism of the ninetheen century (embodies by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn for music, Hegel for philosophy). And Sirk adds in his movies parts of the philosophy of Henry David Thoreau, the american philosopher of the 19° century, who expressed his willingness to live far from the big cities and the artifical life of the United States. The main play of Thoreau is Walden; or, Life in the Woods, published en 1854.
An emblematic actor of movies by Sirk is Rock Hudson. Hudson was known to be a rather good actor with an attractive look, but also very clumsy and far to equal the best actors of his period who were James Stewart, Cary Grant, John Wayne and Gary Cooper. With Sirk, Rock Hudson has reached the status of an icon, embodying the image of the handsome and brillant american male. In my opinion, he’s impressive as an actor for instance in All That Heaven Allows, realised in 1955 by Sirk.We can add that movies by Sirk didn’t have a lot of success from the reviewers in the fifties. But today, his best films are unanimely considered as being masterpieces, and among the best movies ever made.
I remember an anedoct about the emotional impact of his films : I watched Magnificent Obsession at the cinematheque of Paris a few years ago. At the end of this film, which is very stunning, i heard a lot of women in the public blowing their nose.Sirk had a least one artistic hier : the german director Werner Fassbinder. Sirk, who died in 1987, considered Fassbinder as his spiritual son. In a general way, such great melodramas made in the fifties have today disappeared. But we can find some ingredients employed in contemporary american series or movies (for instance : Titanic).
To conclude, I strongly suggest that you shoud discover these films because of their artistic dimension, and also because they are a major contribution to the contemporary american culture.
Thanks for your attention.
