Vittorio Cottafavi fut un cinéaste d'origine aristocratique, érudit, né en 1914 et décédé en 1998. Son oeuvre a eu ses détracteurs et ses admirateurs, en France et en Italie. Elle fait l'objet actuellement d'une rétrospective à Paris, sur grand écran. Les légions de Cléopatre est sorti en salles en Italie en 1959. On ne dira pas que Cottafavi fut le maître absolu de la reconstitution de combats historiques, glaive à la main, encore que ceux qui opposent les légions de Marc-Antoine à celles de Octave soient reconstitués avec beaucoup de soins (costumes, déplacements à cheval). En introduction du film, il est question de la psychologie et du mode de vie de la classe populaire de la cité égyptienne de Alexandrie, et de ses rencontres ordinaires au sein d'une taverne. Le cinéaste vise sans aucun doute à se situer à hauteur du spectateur italien de milieu populaire… Les séquences en question sont surprenantes, loin des canons du cinéma hollywoodien. Les comportements ressemblent plutôt à ceux des italiens des années 1960, mais sont tout à fait crédibles dans le cadre d'un récit situé en pleine antiquité romaine.

A partir de cette entame étonnante, Cottafavi brosse un portrait subtil, intelligent et nuancé de la société antique, et dessine avec un trait fin les relations de pouvoir (universelles et intemporelles) qui unissent et opposent les politiques, militaires, religieux. Il y est question de "Jupiter"… Les personnages principaux (Lucilius, Octave, Marc-Antoine, Cléopâtre,…) ou secondaire (Marianne) possèdent une forte épaisseur psychologique et développent des rapports sociaux modernes. Sur ces aspects, se greffe un mélodrame sublime autour de la personne de Cléopâtre, prise dans les contradictions de sa vie de femme et de dirigeante politique. Beaucoup d'émotions autour de l'actrice Linda Cristal, particulièrement performante… Des dialogues existentiels mais non pompeux, des séquences visuellement magnifiques, positionnent au final Les légions de Cléopatre parmi les chefs d'oeuvre totalement méconnus du cinéma. Et oui, il reste aujourd'hui encore beaucoup d’œuvres de premier plan à découvrir … Il est certain qu'avec cet opus (et quelques autres encore à voir), Cottafavi a sa place gravée au fronton du temple des arts, parmi les maîtres du cinéma.

We cannot say that Cottafavi was the absolute master of the re-enactment of historical fights, sword in hand, although those which oppose the legions of Marc-Antoine to those of Octavian be reconstructed with great care (costumes, horse riding). In the introduction of the film, it is about the psychology and the way of life of the working class of the Egyptian city of Alexandria, and of their ordinary meetings within a tavern. The filmmaker undoubtedly aims to be at the level of the Italian spectator from a popular background … The sequences in question are surprising, far from the canons of Hollywood cinema. The behaviors rather resemble those of the Italians of the 1960s, but are quite credible in the context of a story set in the middle of Roman antiquity.

From this astonishing start, Cottafavi paints a subtle, intelligent and nuanced portrait of ancient society, and draws with a fine line the power relations (universal and timeless) which unite and oppose the politicians, the military, the religious. It is about "Jupiter" … The main characters (Lucilius, Octave, Marc-Antoine, Cleopatra, …) or secondary (Marianne) have a strong psychological depth and develop modern social relationships. On these aspects is grafted a sublime melodrama around the person of Cleopatra, caught in the contradictions of her life as a woman and as a political leader. Lots of emotions around the actress Linda Cristal, particularly efficient … Existential but not pompous dialogues, visually magnificent sequences, position in the end The legions by Cléopatre among the totally unknown masterpieces of cinema. And yes, today there are still many leading works to discover … It is certain that with this opus (and some others still to see), Cottafavi has its place engraved on the pediment of the temple of the arts, among the masters of cinema.
